Getting the tile quantity wrong is one of the most expensive mistakes in a renovation. Run short and you go back to the shop, risking a different production batch with a visibly different shade; overbuy and you are stuck with boxes no retailer takes back once opened. Enter the room area, the layout type and the square meters per box printed on the packaging, and this calculator applies the correct waste allowance and estimates adhesive mortar and grout.

How the calculation works

Three steps. Measure the floor area (width × length; split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add them up). Add the waste allowance, which covers edge cuts, breakage and a reserve for future repairs. Then divide the padded area by the square meters each box contains, always rounding up — no shop sells half a box.

With the calculator defaults: a 30 m² room, straight layout (10% waste) and 2.3 m² boxes gives 33 m² to buy, which is 14.35 boxes, rounded up to 15 boxes covering 34.5 m². Leftover: 4.5 m². Switch to a diagonal layout at 15% waste and it is 34.5 m² — still exactly 15 boxes. In a heavily cut-up room at 20% waste it becomes 36 m² and 16 boxes.

The waste percentages are not sales padding. Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 13753, which governs ceramic floor tiling with adhesive mortar, is the source of the classic 10% figure, and it splits into two halves with different purposes: 5% for unavoidable installation cuts and 5% held in reserve for future replacement.

The table runs the same arithmetic as the calculator — area plus the layout waste allowance, divided by the box coverage and rounded up — using 2.3 m² boxes, the most common coverage for the 60 × 60 cm format sold in Brazil. The figure in brackets is the total area purchased, so you can see the leftover.

Reading two rows: 15 boxes (34.5 m²) cover a 30 m² room laid straight, leaving 4.5 m² in reserve. A 100 m² room needs 48 boxes laid straight against 53 in a heavily cut-up space — 5 boxes of difference from the layout decision alone. In small rooms two different layouts often land on the same box count, because rounding up to a whole box already absorbs the extra waste.

Always check the coverage printed on the box before ordering: if your product ships 2.15 m² per box instead of 2.3, every row here moves up. That is why the field is editable in the calculator above.

Waste allowance by layout

Anything that increases the number of cuts increases waste. In a 45° diagonal layout every perimeter tile becomes an angled cut with poor offcut reuse. Columns, niches, awkward doorways and L-shaped plans multiply the cutting. Some manufacturers recommend up to 30% for complex diagonal work; 15% is the sensible central value and 20% covers heavily irregular rooms.

Large formats deserve their own note. A cut in a 120 × 120 cm slab throws away far more area than a cut in a 30 × 30 cm tile, so add roughly five percentage points to whichever band applies.

Why leftovers matter, and batch matching

Ceramic tiles are fired products, so each production batch carries small variations in shade and in caliber — the real dimension of the piece. Two boxes of the same model bought six months apart can look visibly different side by side, which is why manufacturers tell you to check shade, caliber and batch on every label and to buy the whole job from one batch.

Models are also discontinued. A tile launched today may be unavailable in three years, turning a single cracked piece into a whole-room replacement. Keeping 4–6 m² sealed in a dry place costs almost nothing and solves that problem. Photograph the label as well: it is the only reliable way to reorder the exact product years later.

Overbuying has a cost too. Opened boxes cannot be returned, and most retailers only accept sealed boxes within a time limit and with the invoice. The balance point is the padded area rounded up to the next whole box — exactly what this calculator returns.

Mortar, grout and joints

ABNT NBR 14081 classifies adhesive mortars by bond strength and flexibility. AC-I is the basic grade for dry interior areas only. AC-II adds bond strength and water retention for interior and exterior areas with moderate exposure — balconies, yards, garages, kitchens and bathrooms. AC-III is the high-bond, high-flexibility grade required for facades, pools, tile-over-tile and large formats. Porcelain tile absorbs very little water, which makes mechanical bonding harder, so it calls for AC-II as a minimum and AC-III above 60 × 60 cm or in exposed exterior work.

On quantity: with an 8 mm notched trowel and a single mortar bed the typical consumption is 4–5 kg per square meter, so a 20 kg bag covers 4–6 m². This calculator uses 5 kg/m², roughly 4 m² per bag. Large-format porcelain laid with back-buttering consumes 7–9 kg/m² and drops below 3 m² per bag — double the figure shown if that is your case.

Grout consumption follows the ANFACER formula published by Quartzolit/Weber: kg/m² = [(A + B) × C × J × CR] ÷ (A × B), where A and B are the tile sides in millimeters, C the thickness, J the joint width and CR the grout coefficient (about 1.6 for cement grout). For the reference format used here — 60 × 60 cm, 9 mm thick, 3 mm joint — that gives 0.144 kg/m², rounded to 0.15. Small mosaics have far more linear joint per square meter and can consume ten times as much. Never tile without a joint: it absorbs thermal movement and caliber variation, and its absence is the shortest route to tenting and cracked tiles.

How many boxes of tile do I need for 30 m²?

With a straight layout (10% waste) and 2.3 m² boxes, you need 33 m², which is 15 boxes covering 34.5 m² with 4.5 m² left over. A diagonal layout at 15% waste also lands on 15 boxes; a heavily cut-up room at 20% needs 16. Always check the square meters per box printed on the packaging, as it varies by format and manufacturer.

How many boxes of tile do I need for 50 m²?

Laid straight it is 24 boxes of 2.3 m² (55.2 m² purchased), 25 boxes on a diagonal layout and 27 boxes in a heavily cut-up room. At this size it is worth confirming every box carries the same batch number — shade variation between batches shows up far more across large continuous floors.

What waste percentage should I use?

Brazilian standard NBR 13753 sets the reference at 10% for straight layouts — 5% for cuts and 5% held in reserve. Use 15% for diagonal layouts, and 20% for rooms with columns, niches or an L-shaped plan. Add about five percentage points on top for formats larger than 80 × 80 cm.

How much adhesive mortar does one square meter need?

With a single bed and an 8 mm notched trowel, 4–5 kg per square meter is typical, so a 20 kg bag covers 4–6 m². This calculator uses 5 kg/m², about 4 m² per bag. Large-format porcelain laid with back-buttering rises to 7–9 kg/m² and under 3 m² per bag.

Can I use AC-I mortar for porcelain tile?

It is not recommended. Porcelain has very low water absorption, which makes bonding harder, and AC-I is designed only for dry interior areas and low-demand surfaces. Use AC-II as a minimum, and AC-III for tiles above 60 × 60 cm, facades, exterior areas or tile-over-tile installations.
