Buying too much paint leaves money sitting in the garage; buying too little means a second trip and the risk of a slightly different tint batch. Enter the wall area — or just the room dimensions — and this calculator returns the liters you need plus the cheapest combination of 18-liter cans and 3.6 L tins, using coverage rates taken from Brazilian manufacturer datasheets.
How the calculation works
The formula is the one Coral publishes in its own painting guide: quantity = (area × coats) ÷ coverage rate. This calculator expresses the coverage rate in square meters per liter per coat rather than per can, which makes it possible to suggest a package combination at the end.
In room mode, the wall area comes from 2 × (width + length) × ceiling height — the room perimeter multiplied by wall height — minus the door and window area you enter. A 4 m × 3 m bedroom with a 2.70 m ceiling and 4 m² of openings gives 2 × (4 + 3) × 2.70 = 37.80 m² of gross wall and 33.80 m² of paintable surface.
With 33.80 m², two coats and a premium acrylic rated at 12 m²/L per coat, the result is 5.63 liters — two 3.6 L tins, with enough left over for touch-ups. The 18-liter can would be a waste at that size.
Coverage rates by paint type
Brazilian manufacturers publish coverage as "finished area with 2 to 3 coats" per container, always prefixed with "up to" — best-case figures measured on smooth, sealed, well-prepared walls. The table shows what each brand publishes and the practical value this calculator adopts, which carries roughly a 15–20% safety margin.
Acrylic texture finishes are a special case: they cover about ten times less than ordinary paint because they are applied far thicker, and they are sold in 25–26 kg pails rather than liter cans. One 26 kg pail is roughly equivalent to one 18-liter can for purchasing purposes.

Measuring walls and subtracting openings
Measure each wall corner to corner, then floor to ceiling, and multiply. For a rectangular room the shortcut is perimeter × height, which is exactly what room mode does. Then subtract the openings: a standard 0.80 m × 2.10 m interior door is 1.68 m², a 0.90 m × 2.10 m front door is 1.89 m², a 1.20 m × 1.20 m bedroom window is 1.44 m² and a 2.00 m × 1.20 m living-room window is 2.40 m².
Ceilings count as a separate surface (floor width × length) and are usually painted with PVA latex or white matte acrylic. Doors and frames are painted with enamel and need their own calculation, counting both faces. Skirting boards and niches add labor but almost no paint volume — do not over-engineer the estimate.
Raw plaster or freshly sanded filler absorbs a large share of the first coat. The correct fix is a coat of acrylic sealer rather than extra paint: it usually costs less than the extra coat it saves. If you paint without a sealer, add 20–30% to the quantity.
Two coats, three coats, and where the savings are
Every major Brazilian brand specifies 2 to 3 coats. The first coat seals the substrate and evens out absorption; the second is the one that actually closes the color and evens the sheen. A third coat becomes necessary with saturated colors (reds, yellows, intense blues), with radical color changes, on bare new walls, and over patched areas where filler shows through as a lighter blotch. Switching from two to three coats raises consumption by 50%.
Thinning is the biggest lever on real-world coverage, and the most commonly misused. Every datasheet states the permitted percentage — Suvinil Toque Fosco Completo, for instance, calls for 20% potable water. Staying within that range improves flow and coverage; going far beyond it destroys hiding power and forces an extra coat, so you spend the same or more.
On packaging, the price per liter is lowest in the 18-liter can, then the 3.6 L tin, then the 0.9-liter quart. This calculator automatically swaps five 3.6 L tins (18 liters) for one can. Buy everything in one go and from the same batch: tinted colors can vary slightly between mixes, and the difference shows on the wall.

How much paint do I need for a bedroom?
A typical 4 m × 3 m bedroom with a 2.70 m ceiling has 37.80 m² of wall; subtracting about 4 m² for a door and a window leaves 33.80 m². With a good acrylic paint and two coats that is roughly 5.6 liters, or two 3.6 L tins. Add about 2 more liters if you are also painting the ceiling.
How much area does an 18-liter can cover?
Suvinil and Sherwin-Williams state that 18-liter cans of their matte acrylic lines cover up to 130 m² finished with 2 to 3 coats, and Suvinil Toque Fosco Completo reaches 150 m². Using the practical rate of 12 m²/L per coat adopted here, 18 liters cover 216 m² of a single coat, or 108 m² finished with two coats.
Why is the coverage on the can higher than the value used here?
Because the label figure is a maximum measured under laboratory conditions — smooth sealed wall, maximum permitted thinning, an easy-to-cover color. Real jobs lose paint to substrate absorption, the roller and tray, spatter and touch-ups. The values here sit roughly 15–20% below the advertised numbers so you do not run out on the last wall.
Is the 18-liter can always the better buy?
It is always cheaper per liter, but it only pays off if you use it. Opened paint that is poorly resealed dries out, and five 3.6 L tins add up to exactly the same 18 liters. That is why the calculator converts five tins into one can automatically and suggests tins only for the remainder.
