2026 USCIS filing fees

The amounts below come from the 05/29/2026 edition of Form G-1055, the official USCIS fee schedule. Two rules from the April 2024 fee overhaul still apply: the separate $85 biometrics fee is gone — it is bundled into the filing fee — and eligible forms cost $50 less when filed online.

A worked example: the marriage green card

The most common family package filed from inside the United States combines four forms at once: I-130 ($675) + I-485 ($1,440) + I-765 ($260, because it rides along with the I-485) + I-131 ($630) — $3,005 in government fees for a single applicant. Add another set for every stepchild adjusting status alongside.

Attorneys typically charge $3,500 to $8,000 in flat fees for that full package, so the realistic all-in range runs from roughly $6,500 to more than $11,000. Budget separately for the medical exam with a civil surgeon ($200–$500, rarely covered by insurance), passport-style photos and certified English translations of foreign civil documents.

Fee waivers, reduced fees and the fees you cannot waive

Form I-912 requests a full fee waiver and is generally granted to applicants with documented household income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, applicants receiving a means-tested public benefit, or applicants demonstrating financial hardship. The N-400 also has a reduced fee of $380 for household income below 400% of the guidelines, and current or former members of the US armed forces are exempt from naturalization fees.

Two caveats matter in 2026. A proposed rule published in the Federal Register on June 23, 2026 would eliminate both the fee waiver and the reduced fee for the N-400 and N-336, keeping only the military exemption; the comment period ran to August 24, 2026 and the rule is not final. Separately, the statutory fees created by Public Law 119-21 — $100 to file Form I-589 for asylum plus $100 for each year the case stays pending, $550 for an initial asylum/parole/TPS work permit, $275 to renew it and $500 for TPS — were written into law and cannot be waived at all.

How long each case takes

As of August 2026, N-400 naturalization runs at a national median of roughly 5.5 months, though many field offices sit in the 8-to-14-month range. Family-based I-485 adjustment takes 12 to 20 months, with marriage cases reaching 24 months at backlogged offices, and an I-130 for the spouse of a US citizen ranges from 12 to 21.5 months depending on the service center. Spouses of green card holders (category F2A) wait considerably longer.

Remember that filing fees are never refunded — not for a denial, not for a withdrawal, and not for a rejection caused by an outdated form edition or an underpayment. Foreign-language documents must be accompanied by a full English translation and a signed certificate of translation, or a Request for Evidence is close to guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does US citizenship cost in 2026?

Form N-400 costs $760 on paper or $710 online, biometrics included. With an attorney, add roughly $750 to $2,000 in fees. Applicants with household income below 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines can request a reduced fee of $380, and those below 150% can request a full waiver with Form I-912 — benefits a June 2026 proposed rule would eliminate.

What is the total cost of a marriage-based green card?

Filed concurrently inside the US, government fees total $3,005 per applicant: $675 for the I-130, $1,440 for the I-485, $260 for the I-765 filed alongside, and $630 for the I-131. Add the medical exam ($200–$500) and, if you hire counsel, $3,500 to $8,000 for the full package.

Are USCIS fees refundable if my case is denied?

No. Fees pay for adjudication, not for a favorable outcome, and are not returned after a denial, a withdrawal, or a rejection for an incorrect payment. Refunds happen only when USCIS itself charged in error.

Does filing online actually cost less?

Yes, for the forms that support it: N-400, I-130, I-765, I-90 and N-600 each cost $50 less online. The I-485, I-131 and I-129F have no online option and cost the same either way.
