How a stair stringer is calculated

Every stair layout starts from one number: the total rise. Divide it by the tallest riser you are willing to accept, round that up to a whole number, and the rest of the stair falls out of it.

Step 1 — Number of risers = total rise ÷ target riser, rounded up. You round up, never down, because rounding down would push each riser over your target and potentially past the code limit.

Step 2 — Actual riser height = total rise ÷ number of risers. This is the number that has to be under 7 3/4", and it is the number you mark on the framing square.

Step 3 — Number of treads = number of risers − 1. There is always one fewer tread than riser, because the deck surface itself acts as the top "tread".

Step 4 — Total run = number of treads × tread depth. This is how far the bottom of the stairs sits out from the deck, and it tells you how much yard you are giving up.

Step 5 — Stringer length = √(total rise² + total run²). The stringer is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose legs are the rise and the run.

Worked example, using the calculator defaults: a total rise of 55" with a 7.5" target gives 55 ÷ 7.5 = 7.33, rounded up to 8 risers. Each riser is 55 ÷ 8 = 6.875" — comfortably under code. That leaves 7 treads, a total run of 7 × 10.5" = 73.5", and a stringer length of √(55² + 73.5²) = 91.8", or 7.65 ft. You buy a 10 ft 2x12 for each stringer.

Measuring total rise correctly (this is where stairs go wrong)

A wrong total rise poisons every other number in the layout, and it is the single most common source of a stair that fails inspection. Total rise is measured from the finished landing surface at the bottom to the top of the finished decking at the top — not to the top of the joist, not to the top of the ledger.

The method: run a straight board or a string line out from the top of the deck, level it with a long level or a laser, and measure straight down to the ground at the point where the bottom of the stairs will land. That point is not directly below the deck edge — it is roughly one total run away, and if your yard slopes, the difference between measuring at the deck and measuring at the landing spot can easily be three or four inches.

Two adjustments people forget. First, if you have not installed the decking yet, add its thickness to the rise, because the top of the finished surface is what counts. Second, decide what the stairs will land on before you measure. A concrete landing pad, patio stones or a paver base raise the bottom of the stair, so measure to the top of that finished pad, not to the dirt. "Firm ground" matters too: if the bottom of the stair lands on soil that settles half an inch over the first winter, your bottom riser grows by half an inch and is no longer within the 3/8" tolerance.

IRC stair code: 7 3/4, 10, and 3/8

Three numbers cover almost everything an inspector checks on a residential stair, and they are worth committing to memory.

The 3/8" uniformity rule is the one that catches people. It is not enough for every riser to be under 7 3/4" — they all have to be within 3/8" of each other. That is why you divide the total rise evenly rather than making seven 7.5" risers and letting the last one be whatever is left over. Uneven risers are a trip hazard precisely because your foot learns the rhythm of the stair after two steps and stops looking.

If the calculator returns an actual riser above 7.75", your target was set too high for the rise you entered. Lower the target riser, which adds one more riser to the flight and brings each one down. Going from 8 risers to 9 on a 66" rise, for example, drops each riser from 8.25" to 7.33".

How many stringers do you need?

Stringer count is driven by tread span, not by stair width directly. With standard 2x6 or 5/4 deck boards as treads, stringers should not be spaced more than 16" on center. Beyond that the treads flex underfoot and, over time, cup and crack.

For a code-minimum 36"-wide stair, that means three stringers: one at each side and one down the middle, which puts them about 16" apart. A 48"-wide stair needs four. Anything wider than 36" should get at least four as a matter of course. Composite decking is less stiff than wood and usually wants 12" on center instead of 16" — check the manufacturer's span table, because it overrides the general rule.

The standard stock for a cut stringer is a 2x12. That is not arbitrary: once you notch the rise and run out of the board, what remains under the notches is the structural part. Building codes and most deck guides call for at least 5" of solid wood left below the cuts, and a 2x12 (11.25" actual) is the smallest common board that still leaves that much after a 7.5" × 10.5" notch. Never cut stringers from a 2x10 for a full-height stair.

Buy the board a foot longer than the calculated stringer length. The plumb cut at the top and the level cut at the bottom eat into the ends, and there is no recovering from a stringer that came out an inch short. That is why the calculator rounds up to the next stock length rather than giving you the bare hypotenuse.

Cutting the stringers: pre-cut vs. cutting your own

Home centers sell pre-cut stringers in fixed configurations — typically 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 risers at a fixed 7.5" rise and 10.5" run. If your total rise happens to be an exact multiple of 7.5", they will save you an hour and they are cut accurately. That is a big "if". A 55" rise is not a multiple of 7.5", and forcing a pre-cut stringer onto it produces exactly the uneven bottom riser the 3/8" rule prohibits.

Cutting your own is not difficult. Set a framing square with stair gauges at your actual riser and tread numbers, walk it down the 2x12 marking each step, and cut with a circular saw — stopping at the corner of each notch and finishing the cut with a handsaw or jigsaw, because overcutting the corner weakens the stringer at the exact point where it carries load. Cut one stringer, test-fit it against the deck, and only then use it as a template for the rest.

Then there is the step almost everyone misses the first time: dropping the stringer. When you lay out a stringer, the bottom step measures a full riser from the ground to the top of the first tread cut. But once you nail a tread on it, that step becomes a full riser plus the tread thickness — taller than every other step in the flight, which is both a trip hazard and an automatic code failure on the 3/8" rule. The fix is to cut the bottom of the stringer down by exactly one tread thickness. With 1.5" treads (a 2x6), you trim 1.5" off the bottom level cut. If the stairs land on a concrete pad, remember that the pad thickness is not part of that adjustment — the pad is the landing surface you already measured to.

Common mistakes on deck stairs

The layout math is the easy part. These are the things that send a deck stair back for a second try.

  • Forgetting to drop the stringer. The bottom step ends up one tread thickness too tall. It is the classic first-deck mistake.
  • Measuring total rise to the joist instead of the finished decking. Every riser in the flight comes out short.
  • Measuring rise at the deck edge on a sloped yard instead of where the stairs actually land.
  • Rounding the riser count down to save a step. That pushes each riser over 7 3/4" and fails inspection.
  • Cutting stringers from a 2x10. Not enough wood left under the notches once the steps are cut out.
  • Spacing stringers more than 16" apart with wood treads — or more than 12" with composite.
  • No solid attachment at the bottom. Stringers must be anchored to the landing or a pressure-treated cleat, not just resting on dirt.
  • Using untreated lumber for stringers on an exterior stair. Ground-contact-rated pressure-treated lumber is required where the stringer meets the landing.
  • Cutting all the stringers before test-fitting the first one. Measure the fit at the deck, then template.

How do I calculate stair stringers?

Divide the total rise by your target riser height and round up — that is your riser count. Divide the total rise by that count to get the actual riser height. The tread count is one less than the riser count. Multiply the tread count by the tread depth for total run, then take the square root of rise² + run² for the stringer length. A 55" rise with a 7.5" target gives 8 risers of 6.875", 7 treads, 73.5" of run and a 91.8" stringer.

What is the maximum riser height for deck stairs?

7 3/4 inches under IRC R311.7.5.1, and all the risers in a flight must be within 3/8" of each other. Minimum tread depth is 10 inches under R311.7.5.2, with the same 3/8" uniformity rule. Some jurisdictions amend these numbers, so confirm locally.

How many stringers do I need for a 36-inch-wide stair?

Why is a 2x12 the standard board for stringers?

Because of what is left after you cut the notches. A 2x12 is 11.25" wide, and after notching out a 7.5" rise and 10.5" run there is still roughly 5" of solid wood under the cuts — the part that actually carries the load. A 2x10 does not leave enough, which is why it is not used for cut stringers on a full-height stair.

Can I use pre-cut stringers from the home center?

Only if your total rise is an exact multiple of the pre-cut riser height, usually 7.5". Pre-cut stringers come in fixed riser counts, so a rise of 55" (which wants 8 risers at 6.875") cannot use them without leaving an uneven bottom step. Cutting your own from a 2x12 is the reliable answer for any rise that is not a clean multiple.
