The default fuel price is the ANP national average for regular gasoline in the week of August 30 – September 5, 2026.
How the estimate works
The math has three parts. Divide the total distance by your car’s fuel economy in kilometers per liter to get the volume of fuel. Multiply that by the pump price to get the fuel cost. Then add tolls, which depend on the plazas you cross rather than on distance driven.
With the default values — 400 km round trip, 12 km/l and gasoline at R$6.51 — the trip burns 33.33 liters and costs R$217.00 in fuel, or R$0.54 per kilometer. Split between four occupants, that is R$54.25 each.
Note that Brazilian cars are rated in kilometers per liter, not miles per gallon. As a rough conversion, 12 km/l is about 28 mpg (US).

Driving versus flying or taking the bus
The deciding factor is usually the number of travelers, not the distance. A car charges for the journey; buses and airlines charge per passenger. The São Paulo–Rio round trip costs roughly R$585 including tolls — steep for a solo driver, but about R$146 per head with four people aboard, which few bus or plane fares can match.
Flying starts to win beyond roughly 800–1,000 km each way, when driving would mean more than ten hours at the wheel or an overnight stop. Remember to add costs the calculator does not cover: parking at the destination (often more than R$50 a day in major cities), meals on the road and accommodation.
Cutting the fuel bill
Small habits change the total by up to a quarter. Check tire pressure the day before departure while the tires are cold — running 20% underinflated raises consumption by around 3%. Cruising at 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h saves 15% to 20% of fuel, because aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed. Remove an unused roof rack, which can add up to 10% to consumption, and leave dead weight at home.
One habit is specific to Brazil: nearly every car sold there is flex-fuel, so compare ethanol and gasoline prices along the route. Ethanol delivers about 70% of gasoline’s range, so it only pays when it costs less than 70% of the gasoline price. Should I use city or highway fuel economy?
Use the highway figure for long trips — it is typically 15% to 25% better than city mileage because the engine runs at steady revolutions with no stop-and-go. If the route includes mountain stretches or heavy traffic leaving town, use something in between.
Does this include wear and tear on the car?
No. It covers direct out-of-pocket costs only: fuel and tolls. A full cost of ownership would add tires, oil, servicing and depreciation, roughly R$0.25 to R$0.50 per kilometer for a small car. For a one-off trip, direct cost is usually the fairer comparison against a ticket price.
Are tolls expensive in Brazil?
On concession highways in the Southeast and South, yes — they are charged per axle at each plaza and can reach 20% to 40% of a medium-distance trip’s total. Routing apps show the estimated total for passenger cars; enter that number in the tolls field so your budget is not systematically understated.
