Finding out which appliance is driving your electricity bill takes three numbers: its power rating in watts, how long it runs, and the price of a kilowatt-hour. This calculator turns those into monthly kWh and cost per month, per year and per hour of use. It ships with the Brazilian residential average rate for September 2026 — R$0.95/kWh, taxes and the current yellow tariff flag included — plus presets for the appliances that dominate a household bill.

The formula behind the numbers

A kilowatt-hour is what utilities bill you for: 1,000 watts drawn for one hour. So the calculation is simply power (W) ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × days per month, and then multiplied by your rate to get the cost.

Take the biggest offender in a Brazilian home, the electric shower. At 5,500 W, a 30-minute session every day for 30 days works out to 5.5 × 0.5 × 30 = 82.5 kWh per month — about R$78.38 at R$0.95/kWh, or R$940.50 a year for a single person.

What matters is power multiplied by time, not power alone. That same 5,500 W shower running half an hour a day uses less than a 350 W fridge whose compressor runs about ten hours a day: 82.5 kWh against 105 kWh. Low-power appliances that never stop are routinely underestimated.

These figures come from the same formula the calculator uses, at the default rate of R$0.95/kWh and typical Brazilian usage patterns. Wattages are drawn from utility consumption tables and manufacturer guides.

What a kWh costs in Brazil, and why it varies

There is no single electricity price in Brazil. Each distribution utility has its own tariff, approved annually by the regulator ANEEL, and state ICMS plus federal PIS/COFINS taxes are charged on top. Two households with identical consumption in different states can end up with bills that differ by half.

For 2026, ANEEL projected an average tariff increase of roughly 8%, putting the national residential average near R$851 per MWh — R$0.851 per kWh before state taxes. Of that amount, generation accounts for 41.6%, distribution for 30.8%, sector charges for 20.6% and transmission for 7.1%: less than half of the bill pays for the electricity itself.

After taxes, most Brazilian households land between R$0.85 and R$1.10 per kWh, which is why R$0.95 is used as the default here. On top of the tariff sits the monthly tariff flag, a surcharge that signals how expensive generation is that month. September 2026 is under the yellow flag — the fifth consecutive month since May, reflecting the dry season and low reservoir levels — adding R$1.885 per 100 kWh, or R$0.01885 per kWh. Red flag level 1 adds R$4.46 per 100 kWh and level 2 adds R$7.87.

To get your own rate, divide the total amount due on your latest bill by the kWh it reports, then replace the value in the rate field. That single number already includes taxes, the flag and public-lighting charges.

Reading the wattage, and where the savings actually are

The power rating is printed on the Inmetro ENCE energy label, on the plate at the back or underneath the appliance, and in the manual. If you only find voltage and current, multiply them: 220 V × 5 A = 1,100 W. Electric showers list two ratings, summer and winter — use the winter one, which is higher and the one you actually run in cold months.

Watch out for peak versus average ratings. An inverter air conditioner rated 1,000–1,100 W only draws that while cooling the room down; afterwards the compressor slows and the real average settles around 500 W. Fridges behave the same way, with the 350 W figure applying only while the compressor runs, roughly ten hours a day. Resistive appliances — showers, irons, ovens, dryers — draw their full rating the whole time they are on.

Two categories dominate a Brazilian bill: resistive water heating and air conditioning. Cutting five minutes off each shower for a family of four saves around 27 kWh a month, and switching the shower to its summer setting cuts its draw by 30–40%. Setting the air conditioner to 23–24 °C instead of 18 °C, cleaning filters fortnightly, and replacing a conventional unit with an inverter one all deliver far more than chasing standby losses, which total only 3 to 8 kWh a month across a typical home.

Multiply the kWh by your utility rate including taxes. At the September 2026 average of R$0.95/kWh, 100 kWh costs R$95.00 and 250 kWh costs R$237.50. For your exact rate, divide the total on your latest bill by the kWh it records.

How much electricity does an air conditioner use per month?

A 12,000 BTU inverter split running 8 hours a day uses about 120 kWh a month (R$114). An 18,000 BTU conventional unit with the same usage reaches 384 kWh (R$364.80). Between inverter and conventional units of equal capacity, the gap is typically 40–55%.

Does leaving devices on standby waste much?

A little, but not much. TVs, set-top boxes, consoles, clock microwaves and chargers together account for roughly 3 to 8 kWh a month in an average home, or R$3 to R$8. Switched power strips are worth using, but they will not fix a high bill — the shower and the air conditioner weigh dozens of times more.
