Bricks per square meter, by format

The count per square meter depends on only two variables: the exposed face of the unit (length × height) and the mortar joint. Divide 1 m² by the area each unit occupies once the joint is added to both dimensions.

A 9×19×19 cm clay brick with a 1 cm joint occupies 0.20 × 0.20 = 0.04 m², so 1 ÷ 0.04 = 25 bricks per m². The table below lists the net yield of each common Brazilian format alongside the official SINAPI consumption figure, which already carries a breakage allowance.

Measuring the wall area correctly

Use net masonry area, not gross area. Multiply the length of each wall by its floor-to-ceiling height, then subtract every door and window opening. A 5.00 × 2.80 m wall is 14 m² gross; take out a 0.80 × 2.10 m door (1.68 m²) and a 1.20 × 1.20 m window (1.44 m²) and you are left with 10.88 m² of actual masonry.

Also deduct the strip taken by concrete beams and columns that run through the wall at the same thickness. Do not bother deducting small openings such as electrical boxes — the unit is cut on site and the waste allowance already covers it. Group walls by thickness: 9 cm internal partitions and 14 cm external walls must be calculated separately.

Wall thickness and mortar consumption

Brazilian practice describes walls as "half-brick" or "full-brick" depending on how the unit is laid. A half-brick wall lays the unit on its narrow side — a 9×19×19 brick produces a 9 cm masonry wall, roughly 13 to 15 cm once rendered on both faces. Turning the unit to build a full-brick wall doubles both the thickness and the number of units per square meter.

Thicker walls consume more mortar even when they use fewer units, because the bed joint is filled across the full width of the block. That is why a 14 cm concrete block needs 0.0102 m³ of mortar per m² while a 9 cm clay brick needs 0.0091 m³, despite using half as many pieces.

The reference mix for non-structural masonry in SINAPI is 1:2:8 by volume of cement, hydrated lime and damp medium sand. Each cubic meter of that mortar takes about 196 kg of Portland cement (four 50 kg bags), 174 kg of hydrated lime and 1.16 m³ of sand. The lime is not filler — it provides the plasticity and water retention that a cement-only mix lacks.

Why you should add a waste allowance

No site consumes the exact theoretical quantity. Units arrive cracked, break during unloading, and get cut to close corners and frame openings. SINAPI assumes 13.2% waste for clay units and 8.8% for concrete blocks, reflecting how much more fragile fired clay is.

Choose 5% when delivery is palletized and the layout has few cuts, 10% as the general default for residential work, and 15% for plans with many small openings, curved walls or bulk deliveries tipped onto the ground. Buying 10% extra is rarely a loss — leftovers become a garden wall or a service area. Running short mid-wall costs extra freight, idle labor, and risks a replacement batch with a different color and size.

How many 9x19x19 cm bricks do I need per square meter?

25 per square meter for a 9 cm half-brick wall with a 1 cm mortar joint. Adding a 10% breakage allowance brings it to roughly 27–28 per square meter. The official SINAPI 103328 composition uses 28.31 units per m², which already embeds 13.2% waste.

How many 14x19x39 cm concrete blocks fit in one square meter?

12.5 blocks. With a 1 cm joint each block occupies 0.40 × 0.20 = 0.08 m², and 1 ÷ 0.08 = 12.5. The same yield applies to any block with a 39 × 19 cm face, whether it is 9, 14 or 19 cm wide — width changes the wall thickness, not the count per square meter.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

Yes. Openings receive no masonry, so they must come out of the gross wall area. Only very small penetrations such as socket boxes can be ignored, because the unit is cut on site and the waste allowance absorbs it.

How much mortar does masonry use per square meter?

Between 0.008 and 0.010 m³ per m² for 9 to 14 cm blocks, and about 0.028 m³ per m² for 5×10×20 cm solid bricks, which have far more joints per square meter. In a 1:2:8 mix, each cubic meter of mortar takes roughly 196 kg of cement, 174 kg of lime and 1.16 m³ of sand.
